A few months ago my daughter and I spent an afternoon at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. We always enjoy a visit there, but this time was different. My incredibly intelligent and aware 4 year old asked, “Mommy, why are there no girls here?” She was right. Women were markedly absent from museum displays, as if they played no part in the construction of the transcontinental railroad. So Natalie and I drafted what we hope is a kind, thoughtful letter to the board of directors asking for proper representation for women in museum displays and offered our assistance to reach a positive outcome. We will continue to visit this wonderful museum and encourage everyone to recognize the voices that are present, and those that are absent, in the representations around us.
